Loyalty programs compared

The first thing to understand is that these programs count differently. Royal Caribbean counts nights. Celebrity counts nights weighted by your stateroom. Princess counts whole cruises, or days, whichever gets you there first.

Royal Caribbean: Crown & Anchor Society

Free to join. You earn 1 point per night, and 2 per night in a suite or when you sail solo paying the double-occupancy fare. Points never expire, and can take up to 30 days to appear.

Diamond is the tier that changes your cruise. It brings four complimentary drink vouchers a day, worth up to $14 each, a free day of Surf and Stream internet, Crown Lounge access, and priority seating at the theatre and ice show. Below Diamond you get discounts: internet, laundry, photos, spa.

Diamond Plus adds a fifth daily drink voucher and 30% off beverage packages. Pinnacle Club adds a sixth, free internet for one device for the whole sailing, and 40% off packages. Worth noting: priority check-in appears only at Pinnacle Club in their published benefit grid.

Celebrity: Captain's Club

Free to join, and points depend on where you sleep: 2 per night in an inside or ocean view, 3 in a veranda, 5 in Concierge or AquaClass, 8 to 24 a night in the various suites. Solo travellers paying the full fare earn double. Points do not expire.

Select brings unlimited complimentary cappuccino, latte, espresso and hot tea at any bar, a Wi-Fi discount, a $20 bag of laundry on sailings of 12 nights or more, and priority boarding when you come back aboard in port. Elite adds the cocktail hour from 5 to 7 daily and complimentary pressing and dry cleaning. Zenith, at 3,000 points, includes a premium beverage package, premium Wi-Fi and a complimentary seven-night Caribbean or Bermuda cruise, taxes and fees aside.

Princess: Captain's Circle

You are enrolled automatically once you finish your first Princess cruise. Credits are counted per cruise, not per night, and you earn two credits instead of one for a full suite or for sailing solo on the exclusive occupancy fare.

Because it counts cruises, Princess status comes quickly if you take short cruises often. Ruby, at three cruises, already brings 50% off the MedallionNet package, early access to dining reservations, 10% off the spa and photos, and lounge access. Platinum adds 10% off shore excursions and the shops, priority tender embarkation, a wine tasting, minibar set-up and afternoon tea in your stateroom. Elite adds priority disembarkation and complimentary laundry and shoe polishing.

One honest comparison: Princess never gives free Wi-Fi at any published tier, topping out at 50% off, while Royal Caribbean and Celebrity both include it at their highest tiers. Princess gives free laundry at Elite, which Royal Caribbean only discounts.

Status matching

Royal Caribbean, Celebrity and Silversea match one for one across the three brands, and Royal Caribbean states plainly that this "does not extend to loyalty status earned with other cruise lines or travel brands." The published mapping runs Classic to Gold, Select to Platinum, Elite to Diamond, Elite Plus to Diamond Plus, Zenith to Pinnacle Club.

Princess belongs to a different parent company and publishes no status match with either. The casino programs are a separate matter, and Princess does run a casino Tier Match; that is covered on the casino comps page.
